Conflict Management in the Workplace

  • This half-day course introduces participants to their conflict resolution style, using the Thomas-Kilman Conflict Mode Instrument. Participants will each complete a Thomas-Kilman Instrument (TKI) self-assessment and discover their dominant conflict-resolution mode. They will learn about the other modes and recognize the conflict styles of others. The class will determine its team conflict style. This course is offered in-house.

Confined Spaces

  • This four-hour course provides participants with the knowledge required to enable them to effectively recognize, assess, control and evaluate workplace exposure to confined space hazards. Participants will also learn to identify and discuss the Ontario regulations that apply to the entry into, and being in, a confined space. They will then apply their knowledge while completing a mock Confined Spaces Entry Permit. This course can be adapted to Federal legislation if requested. For in-house training, we will incorporate your confined space policy and the work you do.

Contractor Safety Management

  • This course is designed for those companies who choose to hire an independent operator or other company to do specific work. It explains the duties of all parties under the Occupational Health and Safety Act or the Canada Labour Code, as well as sets out the need for both due diligence and competency under the given legislation. Participants will learn the legal definitions of employer, constructor, construction, projects, and apply them to construction and non-construction work (industrial). Learners will be introduced to a standardized approach to Contractor Safety Management.

Driving Hazards (including Winter Driving)

  • This four-hour module allows participants to describe the consequences of unsafe driving and why it is important for employers to address factors that have been identified in the literature as increasing the risk of vehicle crashes. Winter driving hazards are explored in the course as well as some commonly identified unsafe behaviours associated with driving. Participants will examine legislation related to driving and discuss some ways to assess risk of unsafe driving behaviour. They will describe controls that can be implemented to reduce the risk of undesired events associated with driving.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Being prepared for emergencies can save lives and property, as well as prevent unexpected costs for companies and organizations. This four-hour module provides background on the need for emergency preparedness and includes some tools for designing a program. Participants will have the opportunity to work with these tools during the course and will leave with a basic framework that can be expanded into a program to meet their specific circumstances and requirements.

Health and Safety Overview; Rights and Responsibilities

  • Health and Safety Overview is appropriate for all workers and all workplaces. This half day or one-day course is designed to familiarize participants with the Occupational Health and Safety Act or the Canada Labour Code, Part II. The roles and requirements of Joint Health and Safety Committees, and Health and Safety Representatives are reviewed. In Federal workplaces, Health and Safety Representatives, Workplace Health and Safety Committees and Policy Committees, are reviewed. Participants are also introduced to Early and Safe Return to Work Programs.

Heat Stress and Cold Stress

  • This four-hour module provides participants with the knowledge required to recognize and assess potential heat and cold stress hazards, and explains how the body responds to such stress. Participants will learn about associated health effects, review related legislation and regulations, and the tools needed to recommend controls to eliminate or reduce exposure to these hazards in the workplace.

Incident Investigation (based on CSA Standard Z1005-17)

  • This course can be taught in a four-hour format or one-day format based on the needs of the employer. Topics covered include incident investigation policies and programs, pre-planning, reporting requirements, choosing the team, conducting investigations, writing the report, and follow up. The participants will focus on contributing and underlying factors of incidents; a systems approach. In the one-day format, for in-house training requests, HSPI consultants will work with the employer to customize as required. Workplace violence and harassment investigations can be added to in-house training courses, as requested.

Internal Auditor Training

  • Health & Safety Professionals Inc. offers a two-day course for internal auditors. Learners will review the core elements of an occupational health and safety management system and key components of an audit program. The course is based on the ISO-19011:2011 guidelines for auditing management systems. The elements in the auditing document are applied to Z1000-14 Occupational health and safety management. This program is highly interactive, and gives the participants several opportunities to practice and apply the theory in case studies. This course is available for in-house only.

Machine Hazards

  • Machines increase the efficiency of the workers who use them, however machines can be dangerous. This course provides participants with a basic review of machinery and an introduction to lockout procedures and machine safeguarding, including the principles that underlie them and their practical application. Participants will leave the course being able to identify, recognize, assess, and evaluate hazard controls of the machines in their workplaces. 

Office Ergonomics

  • This two-hour course reviews the specifics of office ergonomics. Once a participant has completed this course, he/she will be able to recognize common pitfalls and set up his/her own office area. The course focuses on the work processes, the chair, screen, and available ergonomic tools. For in-house courses, the group can assess specific setups and offer solutions.

Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders

  • This half-day or one-day course provides participants with the knowledge required to enable them to recognize hazards of work design which increase the risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). Participants will learn how to control hazards which can lead to MSDs using ergonomic principles. Participants will also identify and examine strategies to introduce controls, implement changes in the workplace, and evaluate the effectiveness of their control methods. 

Project Management for the Safety Professional 

  • For many years, project management was considered to be relevant only to large construction or technology efforts. The interesting thing is that project management concepts, even very basic ones, can and should be applied in almost every walk of life and industry. This informative one-day workshop invites these disciplines into your organization and applies them in a methodical manner. Appropriate levels of structure, documentation, and oversight will transform seemingly unorganized tasks into related, sequenced work that is set up for optimal benefit. Participants will learn the basic concepts of Project Management and how to apply them, discuss Planning, Implementing and Closing a Project, and review key pitfalls to avoid when planning and managing a project. Be prepared to learn about tips for increasing project success and the importance of the ‘people’ side of Project Management. This one-day course is taught by Norma Gardner, Managing Partner of Gardner Consulting.

Slips, Trips, and Falls

  • This four-hour module increases participants' awareness of the significant potential hazards contributing to slips, trips and/or falls in the workplace and will help participants identify possible control measures. Major contributing factors of slips, trips, and falls will be discussed and an assessment approach, including checklists is taught. Participants will also learn how to evaluate the control measures.

Stress in the Workplace

  • This four-hour module trains participants to recognize workplace stressors and to make recommendations concerning its assessment and control. Upon completion of this unit, participants will be able to define and recognize symptoms of stress and the potential for post-traumatic stress disorder in the workplace. Participants will also learn how to identify possible control and management strategies, and evaluate hazard controls.

Time Management

  • "So many things to do; not enough time." How many times have we heard that? There are several techniques to help with managing time at work. It often begins with recognizing that there is a better way to do something, allocating time to tasks, and organizing tasks so that you are not wasting time. We need to learn to prioritize, delegate, and know when a project is done and move on. Contact us with your specific needs and we an put together a hands-on training program to meet your needs.

Train the Trainer

  • This course is specifically designed for those in the workplace who feel competent to provide training to other workers in their area of expertise, however, have never received formal training in adult teaching and learning principles. Throughout this two-day course, the individuals will be taught how to provide effective training as well as have a chance to conduct a mini lesson on their own. This training is essential to ensuring that employees are getting the most out of their in-house trainer. This course can be cutomized to any workplace application.

Violence and Harassment

  • There is legislation in place that requires employers to complete violence risk assessments, write policies, put programs in place, train workers, and investigate complaints. This is true of provincial legislation (OHSA) as well as federal legislation (Canada Labour Code). In this four-hour module, participants apply the principles of Recognize, Assess, Control, and Evaluate Hazard Controls to study the incidence and impacts of violent incidents in the workplace, and begin to develop tools and strategies to reduce the risk to employees. Let us know what your challenges are and we can customize the course to suit your needs. This course can also be expanded to include harassment investigations.

WHMIS 2015

  • Workplace Hazard Material Information System (WHMIS) Training is a four-hour course for workers who may be exposed to a hazardous product in the course of their work. This course has been updated to meet the requirements of WHMIS 2015. Learn about the new hazard groups, categories, and classes, pictograms, signal word, hazard statements, and precautionary statements. Learners are encouraged to bring a few of their workplace Safety Data Sheets to class to apply their new knowledge. Participants receive a laminated wallet card upon successful completion of this course.

Workplace Inspections

  • This four-hour module explains to members of joint committees, supervisors, and managers, the purposes of a workplace inspection, the legal requirements, and the tools used. The group will review the four steps involved in workplace inspections and complete a case study.

Customized Training Programs 

  • Health & Safety Professionals Inc. (HSPI) develops training programs for organizations. HSPI works directly with a company representative or committee in order to ensure that all information presented concurs with current company policies, practices, and workplace culture. These programs then become the property of the organization which commissioned the training program. Examples of such courses include; Air Monitoring in Confined Spaces, Health & Safety Supervisor Training, Confined Space Procedure Review, Policy and Procedure Training, WHMIS, Emergency Management, Auditing, and Contractor Safety/Environmental Program.
